"They're the best. There's no one like them, no one in their league." - Larry King, CNN

"Clapped like mad for the Capitol Steps! The best musical satire on Washington I've ever seen!" - The Washington Times

Just in time to offer some well-rounded levity to election season, the hilarious political comedy of the Capitol Steps arrives at Appalachian State University, with wisecracks directed at both "the reds" and "the blues," reminding us that—regardless of political affiliation—everyone needs a good laugh.

Sung to the tunes of familiar songs, the equitably-distributed satire of the Capitol Steps is literally generated from the Hill. The cast of the Capitol Steps includes many members that have worked on Capitol Hill for Republicans, Democrats and those who, in the words of the Steps, "firmly straddle the fence."

The Capitol Steps came together in December of 1981 when three of Senator Charles Percy's staff members were in need of entertainment for a Christmas party and decided to dig into the political headlines of the day. From there, Elaina Newport, Bill Strauss, and Jim Aidala (the group's original three members) backtracked Ronald Regan's steps and transformed themselves from politicians into entertainers. They were such a hit that they decided they should take the act and hit the road. In their 26 years and 28 albums that have followed, the Capitol Steps continue to create song parodies and skits that convey a unique brand of satirical humor that has became popular throughout the country.

The Steps have performed for the past five U.S. presidents, have been featured on ABC's Good Morning America and 20/20, NBC's The Today Show, CNN's Inside Politics, CBS, PBS, and regularly appear on National Public Radio, performing special features, including their popular Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The only complaints they seem to receive are from politicians and personalities not included in their program! No matter who's in the headlines—whether it's the Democrats' infatuation with Barack Obama or the Republicans' with Sarah Palin—the witticisms of the Capitol Steps are not to be missed.

Using live performance to engage students and enhance classroom lessons:

(Class Discussion)
What did you find funny about this show? Was there anything in it that offended you? Why/why not? Why do you think so many people came to the event? Why do we crave humor that satirizes our political system? What makes political satire so appealing to the American public, especially in a university setting? Are there other examples of this kind of humor that you can find in our popular culture?
