"The sound produced by the quartet and its sense of ensemble were exceptionally fine... It was a delight to savor the superior cello, the sweet, soaring and invariably secure top lines and the strong inner voices. This is a wonderful young ensemble." - Classical Voice of North Carolina
Since their founding at the Bowdoin International Music Festival in 1999, the Degas Quartet has emerged as the most exciting young string quartet on stage today. Renowned for energetic performances of the classical and contemporary quartet repertoire, the Degas Quartet plays with vibrant intensity and exceptional musicianship.
The Degas Quartet's performances have been met with much critical acclaim. The Classical Voice of North Carolina recently praised the quartet's sound and sense of ensemble as, "exceptionally fine," noting that, "It was a delight to savor the superior cello, the sweet, soaring and invariably secure top lines and the strong inner voices. This is a wonderful young ensemble."
Based in Hickory, North Carolina, where they are featured on the UBS Chamber Classics concert series, the Degas Quartet features Emily Popham (violin), Timothy Peters (violin), Philip von Maltzahn (cello) and Simon Ertz (viola). The quartet studied the standard repertoire with some of America's finest ensembles, and has performed and coached chamber music at many leading North Carolina colleges and universities, including Brevard College, Davidson College and Appalachian.
