"Angel of the South Emmylou Harris only came upon country music by accident, yet her extraordinary voice gave new life to the genre – and still touches something deep in America's soul." – The Observer (London)
The Grammy Award-winning Emmylou Harris has been hailed as a major figure in several of America's most important musical movements of the past three decades. A steadfast supporter of roots music and a skilled interpreter of compelling songs, the wide range of her repertoire is mirrored by the musicians who have sought her out as a collaborator. Her contributions to country-rock, the bluegrass revival, folk music, and the Americana movement are widely praised, and in recent years she also has perfected a sound that is distinctly her own.
Harris is one of the most admired and influential women in contemporary country music, but her scope extends far beyond that genre. For over 30 years, she has flowed effortlessly between genres achieving popularity in pop, folk, country and now alternative music. The common bridge is a wonderful vocal style and a gift for discovering the heart of a song. Billboard Magazine has called her a "truly venturesome, genre-transcending pathfinder." Throughout her career, she has been admired for her talent as an artist and song connoisseur, and to reiterate this point are her 11 Grammys, recognition as a Lifetime Achievement Performer at The Americana Music Awards and numerous other awards and inductions. She has recorded with such diverse artists as Ryan Adams, The Band, Beck, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash, The Chieftains, Elvis Costello, John Denver, Bob Dylan, George Jones, The Judds, Little Feat, Lyle Lovett, Bill Monroe, Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Tammy Wynette, Trisha Yearwood and Neil Young.
The concert will open with a set by up-and-coming talent Teddy Thompson. Born in 1976 in London, Thompson formed his first band in his early teens. At age 18, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began to pursue a musical career in earnest, writing songs, recording demos and playing live solo gigs. The growing buzz of his budding career won Thompson a deal with Virgin Records, which released his solo debut, Teddy Thompson, in 2000. He went on to record a self-released six-song EP, Blunderbuss, and to tour as part of Rosanne Cash's band. His latest recording, Separate Ways, released in February 2006, demonstrates the assurance and experience that Thompson has gained in the years since his solo debut.
