"Passionate... impeccable... and unequaled point of entry to the riches of a fabulous culture!" - Los Angeles Times
Ballet Folklórico de México sets itself apart by combining their artists' talents with the traditional music, elaborate dance and ornate costumes of Mexican culture. The result is a stunning performance that disseminates the rich tradition and folklore of Mexico throughout the world. The New York Times calls Ballet Folklórico de México's performance, "a fast-paced, entertaining show that can make viewers want to rush right off to Mexico."
Ballet Folklórico de México was founded in 1952 by dancer and choreographer Amalia Hernandez, who was embarking on a quest to rescue the dancing traditions of Mexico. She stated as her goal, "to share the beauty of the universe in motion" through Mexican dances from the Pre-Colombian era, the Hispanic Viceroy period, and the popular period of the Revolutionary years.
The company's initial presentations were picked up by a weekly, Mexican government-sponsored television program, which quickly popularized their performances. Just a few years into their formation, the company achieved a significant degree of international success that has been maintained for over fifty years. Since 1959, it has been permanently presented at the Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico's premier cultural center. Today, having performed more than 5,000 performances, both Amalia Hernandez and the Ballet Folklórico de México have been distinguished with over 200 awards recognizing their artistic merits.
