"Fans of roots/folk music legend 'Doc' Watson, as well as aficionados of the American musical genre, will find much to cheer about in this oral documentary of Watson's life." - Publishers Weekly

"A captivating portrait of Doc Watson... Critic's choice." - USA Today

Hills of Home is an exciting musical event featuring folk tunes and mountain wisdom from living legend Doc Watson and storyteller/musician David Holt, and some of the best banjo picking in the South with special guest Riley Baugus. The audience is invited into a friendly conversation between Doc and Dave, in which Doc provides background stories to some of his favorite tunes, and is joined in performing them by two of North Carolina's best bluegrass musicians. Covering the gamut of mountain musical traditions from old-time to bluegrass and from ballads to blues, Doc Watson shares personal recollections and stories from his long and remarkable Appalachian life.

As recipient of the National Medal of Arts, National Heritage Fellowship and eight Grammy Awards (including Lifetime Achievement), Doc Watson is a powerful singer and tremendously influential picker who virtually invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on the flattop guitar. A native of nearby Deep Gap, this legendary performer blends his traditional Appalachian musical roots with bluegrass, country, gospel and blues to create a unique style and expansive repertoire.

Best known for his folk music and storytelling recordings as well as his television and radio series (including Folkways on PBS and Riverwalk on public radio), four-time Grammy winner David Holt has been collecting songs and stories of the Southern Mountains for over 30 years and is dedicated to performing and preserving traditional American music and storytelling.

Special guest Riley Baugus is known for his work on the Cold Mountain soundtrack. The latest in a long line of North Carolina banjo pickers, Baugus adds some serious picking to this already exciting presentation of Hills of Home.

Using live performance to engage students and enhance classroom lessons:

(Writing Assignment)
Consider a story told or the lyrics of a song sung during this show. How was the telling of this show distinctive of Appalachian culture (style, vernacular, character names, or other specific examples from class)? Can you find examples of this story told in other cultures other than Appalachia? How is it changed to "fit" another cultural paradigm? What elements remain the same?
