"This adaptation single-handedly reinvented the page to stage genre." - The Guardian (London)

"The major touring classical theatre in the United States." - The New York Times

After an acclaimed run in London's West End, The Acting Company - with director Davis McCallum - proudly presents the American premiére of Polly Teale's groundbreaking adaptation of Jane Eyre. Originally produced by the world-class Shared Experience company, Jane Eyre is Charlotte Brontë's extraordinary coming-of-age story of one of literature's most independent and strong-willed women. Recognized as a masterpiece when it published in 1847, Jane Eyre remains a startlingly modern blend of passion, romance and suspense. Although Jane Eyre is obscure and plain, locked in the attic of her imagination is a passionate and wild woman full of longing. For the first time, she has fallen in love, and her orderly world is threatened. Teale's stunning visual imagery and powerful style transform Brontë's great novel into deeply affecting drama.

Honored by the Tony Awards for Excellence in Theater, The Acting Company has won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, Citibank's Excellence in Education Award, two Audelco and Obie Awards, and has given a generation of actors the opportunity to master their craft, including alumni members Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, Jesse L. Martin, Frances Conroy, Rainn Wilson and Jeffrey Wright. The company has performed 125 productions for over three million people in 48 states and nine foreign countries. With the presentation of Teale's celebrated adaptation of Jane Eyre, The Acting Company continues its 34-year tradition of bringing touring classical productions, talented young actors and teaching artists into communities across America.

Free Lecture: "Page to Stage"

Prior to the evening performance, The Acting Company will conduct a free lecture class for the public, "Page to Stage," on February 16, 2007, from 2:30 until 3:30pm, in the I.G. Greer Auditorium. The lecture will provide valuable background information and insight into the Jane Eyre production, including the historical context of the play, how the life of Charlotte Brontë influenced the life of her heroine, how the vision of the novel was translated to stage, and how music underscoring a play can profoundly impact overall production.
