"Not to be missed—this is a splendid evening spent with dancers who have elegance, a sense of fun and a feel for danger." - New York Post
"Lickety-split technique... emarkable precision" - The New York Times
"...performers of stunning versatility and dramatic power." - Dance Magazine
Internationally lauded North Carolina Dance Theatre performs some of the best American choreography of the century in American Masterpieces, including works by Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine and Twyla Tharp.
The evening's repertoire will include Ailey's classic Night Creature, in which the company is propelled by the exuberance of Duke Ellington's symphonic score. North Carolina Dance Theatre is the first and only company to perform this piece. Also featured are George Balanchine's wildly popular ballet, Who Cares?, portrayed by the company with an energy that is broadly American and characteristic of Manhattan, and Tony Award-winning Twyla Tharp's classic Nine Sinatra Songs, which pairs the timeless tunes of "Ol' Blue Eyes" with Oscar de la Renta-designed costumes and a diverse group of extraordinarily talented dancers.
Founded in 1970, North Carolina Dance Theatre is the oldest professional ballet company in North Carolina. With an established national reputation for artistic excellence, the company is among the finest mid-sized dance companies in the United States, and has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. North Carolina Dance Theatre's excellence has long been recognized in its home city of Charlotte and in the many communities that form the touring roster. This excellence has fostered performances at major dance festivals including the Spoleto Festival, the American Dance Festival and DanceAspen.
